On December 3, 2025, Russia’s communications and media regulator, "Roskomnadzor" completely blocked the access to Roblox (which is a U.S. based, user-created-content platform) across the country. This decision affected both the Roblox website and its mobile app too, and many Russian players reported that the service has stopped loading inside Russia unless they used technical workarounds such as 'Virtual Private Networks' (VPNs). Also, we already know that Russia isn't the first country to ban Roblox, it's literally the 12th country to ban this platform. Apart from Russia, the eleven other countries which are - Oman, Jordan, China, Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Algeria, North Korea, Guatemala, Vietnam, and additionally Netherlands and Belgium have imposed restrictions on certain games within the platform.

Reasons:-

Russian authorities gave several stated reasons for the block. The regulator’s public statements and state media coverage highlighted three recurring claims.

1) Extremist content:

Officials said Roblox hosted materials that could be interpreted as promoting or justifying extremist or terrorist acts. "Roskomnadzor", accused the platform of repeatedly circulating content that advocated for and justified extremist or terrorist activities, even including the scenarios that simulated terrorist attacks and other violent crimes.

2) Promotion of "LGBT propaganda":

"Roskomnadzor" and state outlets also argued some content on Roblox constituted 'LGBT propaganda' and accused for distributing related material, especially where it could be seen as accessible to minors. This category is often cited by Russian authorities when restricting platforms and they say it gradually weakens the children’s "spiritual and moral development".

3) Failing in child-safety and moderation:

Officials stated that the platform was "rife with inappropriate content" and sexualized or predatory behavior in some user-created spaces has grown in recent years. Russian officials referenced child-protection concerns when justifying the block. They also stated that Roblox provides exposure to gambling scenarios.

What actions the Russian government is likely to take?

The immediate action is to instruct 'Russian internet service providers' (ISPs) to block Roblox domains, IP addresses, and mobile-app store endpoints so the site and apps stop functioning inside Russia without technical workarounds. Reports already indicate that users face access failures to Roblox. The regulator issues press notices and often references specific legal provisions used to justify the block. By this, the pressure can be increased on the company to respond publicly or to implement changes to meet Russia’s demands.

In past cases, Russian authorities have asked platforms to remove particular pieces of content, register with Russian authorities, store certain data locally, or cooperate with law enforcement. If Roblox seeks unblocking, it may face a list of compliance requirements.

I personally think that Roblox has just lost its millions of visitors, this ban might impact the platform. If Roblox continues to operate the same way, it will faces great difficulties such as facing backlash from the audience and local people, it might face huge restrictions or blockages from various governments and even more. Russian government might take even further actions against Roblox and we already know that Roblox Corporation is currently facing numerous lawsuits in the United States.

What do you guys think of Roblox and it's actions? What do you think about further actions that Russian Government should take against Roblox Corporation? Let us know your opinion on this in the comments.
