The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 which is known for now as "Cyberpunk 2" (formerly called as "Project Orion") has already its entered pre-production on May 28, 2025 and this is what we already know. In the company’s Q3 2025 financial report, CDPR confirmed that about 135 developers are currently working on the game. Despite this progress, CDPR (CD Projekt Red) has cautioned fans not to expect "Cyberpunk 2" for a while. The company indicated that the game will not debut before 2028. It clearly makes sense why there is still no exact or expected release date for this game, but many analysts and outlets consider a 2029 or 2030 launch window more realistic, given typical AAA development cycles.
Also, CDPR is switching away from its old in-house engine to adopt Unreal Engine 5, and this change promises fans a greater experience while playing this game. In addition to 'Night City' (from the original game), the sequel is expected to feature at least one brand-new major location that is described informally as a "dark, dystopian city" roughly inspired by a "Chicago gone wrong".
Why It’s Taking So Long?
According to CDPR’s co-CEO, the studio’s usual timeline from pre-production to final release is 4 to 5 years and this is obvious. The Cyberpunk 2 entered on pre-production in this year 2025 and now, not just famous analysts or outlets, but even audiences who have huge craze for this game expect it to be released on 2029. Also, CDPR is not just working on Cyberpunk 2. Their other huge top leading project that is "The Witcher 4", is also in active development. That means, only a fraction of their full development capacity is currently dedicated to Cyberpunk 2.
Another major reason is that Cyberpunk sequel team is relatively small, there are only 135 developers, but CDPR is already planning to grow it to 300 – 400 developers by 2027, and even increasing the number of developers also consumes more time. Even the move from 'CDPR’s in-house engine' to 'Unreal Engine 5' is a major technical transition. While it brings opportunities and advantages, it also carries extra burdens for developers.
Even after knowing this huge delay, fans and gamers are already buzzing for Cyberpunk 2, because the original Cyberpunk 2077 was already a huge success and gained an extremely good reputation. Fans already know the rumours of this game's features such as - much bigger, more advanced world with a second city, expanded lore, and better tech (with the help of 'Unreal Engine 5') and more. Many fans are not seeing 'Cyberpunk 2' as just another sequel, but as a "next-gen cyberpunk experience".
I personally think that even though this game is a long way from its launch, it is definitely worth the wait. There is also the possibilities that CDPR could even delay this game if they continue to have less resources or if they fail to cope with future challenges.
