Exit 8, which is one of the most anticipated Japanese horror films of 2026, has officially dropped its final trailer. This movie is a live-action adaptation of Kotake Create's globally viral 2023 indie video game, "The Exit 8," which is a walking simulator that became a cultural obsession across Steam, Nintendo Switch, and social media alike.
The trailer showcases the full roster of anomalies, which is from subtly misplaced doorknobs to bloodied ceilings, while also hinting at the emotional underpinning that Kawamura has layered beneath the game's originally narrative-free structure. A man grappling with impending fatherhood, his own cowardice, and a mysterious child who may hold the key to everything.
Story Behind Exit 8's Creation:
This project was officially announced by "Toho" on December 27, 2024, with "Genki Kawamura," who is confirmed as writer, director, and producer. Simultaneously, Kazunari Ninomiya was announced as the lead, with Yamato Kochi cast as "The Walking Man," the silent, recurring figure who haunts the corridor across every loop.
Filming for this movie took place in "Tokyo" from late 2024 through early 2025. Rather than shoot inside an actual subway station, the production team built a purpose-built replica set modeled on the eerily sterile corridors of the original game's underground passage. Cinematographer Keisuke Imamura was tasked with maintaining that razor-thin line between normal and wrong, which is a visual precision central to the entire premise.

Ninomiya, who is a self-described gamer familiar with the game firsthand, took an unusually active role in shaping the production. He is formally credited with "script cooperation" after personally reaching out to Kawamura with gameplay observations that helped the team turn a narrative-free walking simulator into a psychologically rich feature film. "I felt it was necessary to organize things before filming so that there would be a single exit," Ninomiya explained.
On May 1, 2025, actress Nana Komatsu was announced as a mystery cast member with no official character name. The first international teaser trailer was released by "Toho" in March 2025, and on May 2, 2025, which is a companion novel written by Kawamura himself was announced for simultaneous publication with the film.
